The main focus of the 4th SOLAIRE Postgraduate School is on theoretical aspects relating to magnetic
reconnection, solar flares and CMEs. Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma physics process that plays a key role
in many solar phenomena not only solar flares and CMEs, but also in coronal heating, driving the solar wind and in
magnetic field generation through dynamo action. It is also a process that is central to the magnetospheres of planets,
the heliosphere and other stellarspheres, as well as playing a major part in many astrophysical objects, such as accretion discs,
stellar coronae, etc.
The theory of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) has been applied successfully to many aspects of magnetic reconnection and the
basics of MHD
will be covered in this course. Many other topics will also be covered including 2D and
3D MHD reconnection, kinetic aspects of reconnection, as well as applications of reconnection to coronal heating, flares,
CMEs and the magnetosphere. For further details, a full list of lectures can be found here.
This school is especially aimed at PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who are part of the SOLAIRE network, but is also open to other
early-stage and experienced researchers outwith the network. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide support for
students for attending the School. The number of participants will be limited to about 30.
